National Day of Service and Remembrance

The AmeriCorps of American Red Cross of Greater Chicago participated in the first officially recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance on September 11, 2009.

We went to Perspectives- Calumet Middle School in Chicago and organized a supply drive and comfort kit assembly activity.

Comfort kits are bags filled with personal items such as; toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and shampoo. The kits are given to people after they have experienced a disaster.

The middle schoolers collected quite a few items and we were able to put together 50 comfort kits!

The students also learned about how American Red Cross helps people affected by disaster and how they can volunteer to help. If you are interested in volunteering visit the “Volunteer” page on our website.
